About Voyageur Trades
The Voyageur Trades Program is about creating real opportunities in the skilled trades for Métis citizens across Alberta.
It’s built on a simple idea: when people are given the right support, experience and connections, they can build meaningful, lasting careers and strong futures for themselves and their communities.
This program is designed for individuals who are ready to take the next step, moving beyond training and into real job-site experience. It focuses on helping participants gain the hours, hands-on skills and confidence needed to move forward in their chosen trade.

“We are proud to support Alberta Métis citizens in building careers in the skilled trades. This program is about opportunity, mentorship, and ensuring that Métis people are part of Alberta’s growing workforce.”
- Dylan Turner
Associate Director, Provincial Projects and Initiatives
More than just a training initiative, the Voyageur Trades Program connects participants with mentors and opportunities that support long-term success. It’s about building pathways that are practical, supported and rooted in real-world experience.
The Opportunity
The demand for skilled trades in Alberta continues to grow and with it comes significant opportunity.
Across the province, construction and infrastructure projects are expanding to meet the needs of a rapidly growing population. At the same time, a large portion of the current workforce is nearing retirement, creating a gap that will require thousands of new skilled workers in the years ahead.
This is not a future challenge. It is happening now. Employers are actively looking for trained, job ready individuals who can step into these roles and build long term careers in the trades.
“…highlighting the need for targeted training and mentorship opportunities.”²
The Voyageur Trades Program is designed to respond to both of these realities.
“Alberta is expected to see more than 40,000 construction workers retire by 2033…” ¹
It creates a bridge between training and employment by supporting Métis participants as they gain real job site experience, connect with mentors and build the hours and confidence needed to move forward in their trade.
By strengthening these pathways, the program is helping to build a workforce that reflects the communities it serves while creating long term opportunity, stability, and pride for Métis individuals, families, and future generations.
How the Program Works
From training to real job site experience
The Voyageur Trades Program is built for individuals who are ready to move from training into real work experience.
It supports Métis apprentices as they take the next step in their careers by gaining meaningful, hands-on experience in real job site environments.
Through the program, apprentices:

Work alongside Red Seal Journeypersons, learning directly from experienced trades professionals

Gain experience across a variety of job sites and projects, building a well rounded skill set

Earn apprenticeship hours that are recognized by Alberta Apprenticeship and Industry Training

Build practical, job ready skills through real work, not simulated training

Throughout their placement, apprentices receive guidance and support that helps them build confidence, strengthen their skills and better understand what it takes to succeed in their chosen trade.
The program is designed to create a clear and supported transition from training into the workforce. It gives apprentices the opportunity to apply what they have learned, continue developing their skills, and move forward with confidence toward certification and long-term careers in the trades.
Real projects that make
a real difference
Instead of simulated training, apprentices work on real projects that support Métis citizens, organizations and non-profit organizations.
These projects are rooted in community need and give apprentices the opportunity to apply their skills in meaningful, hands-on ways while contributing to spaces that are actively used and valued.
Projects may include:
- Renovations or repairs for community spaces
- Upgrades for non-profit facilities
- Small scale construction projects
- Maintenance or improvement work
Each project provides more than just technical experience. Apprentices learn how to work as part of a team, adapt to real job site conditions and take pride in seeing a project through from start to finish.
Working in community-based settings also creates a deeper connection to the work itself. Apprentices can see the direct impact of what they are building or improving, and how it supports individuals, families, and organizations.
Every project is both a learning opportunity and a meaningful contribution. It is a chance to build skills while giving back, strengthening both individual pathways and the communities those pathways are connected to.
MENTORSHIP
is at the core of the program
Red Seal Journeypersons guide apprentices through real work environments — helping them build skills, confidence and a clear understanding of what it takes to succeed in the trades.
At its core, this program is about lowering the barrier to entry for people who want to
get into the trades but don’t have a clear pathway in.
