A New Path Forward: Introducing the Voyageur Trades Program

A new chapter in skilled trades training is here.

The Voyageur Trades Program, an initiative of the Rupertsland Institute, is designed to do more than support apprentices. It’s built to change how people enter, experience, and succeed in the skilled trades.

Across Alberta, the demand for skilled tradespeople continues to grow. At the same time, many aspiring apprentices face barriers gaining the hours, mentorship, and on-the-job experience required to move forward.

The Voyageur Trades Program is designed to change that.

Built on Mentorship, Experience and Opportunity

This is not a classroom-first program. It’s a hands-on, mentorship-driven approach that places Métis apprentices directly into real work environments—supported by experienced Red Seal journeypersons who guide, teach, and help open doors.

Participants don’t just learn the trade.
They build hours.
They gain confidence.
They become part of a working crew.

Through structured placements and community-based projects, apprentices contribute to meaningful work while developing the skills and experience needed to advance their careers.

Supporting the Full Apprenticeship Journey

The Voyageur Trades Program is designed for individuals who are ready to take the next step—those who have completed pre-apprenticeship training or are already on their apprenticeship path but need the opportunity to keep moving forward.

By combining mentorship with real project experience, the program helps remove one of the biggest barriers in the trades: access.

  • Access to hours.
  • Access to guidance.
  • Access to opportunity.

And just as importantly—access to a network.

Strengthening Communities Through Skilled Trades

The impact of the Voyageur Trades Program extends beyond individual apprentices.

By partnering with organizations, communities, and employers, the program supports projects that create real value—building capacity where it’s needed while developing the next generation of skilled workers.

It’s a model that recognizes something important: when apprentices succeed, communities benefit.

Grounded in Métis Values

The name “Voyageur” reflects a legacy of resilience, adaptability, and skill—qualities that continue to define Métis people today.

This program carries that legacy forward, creating a space where apprentices are supported not only in their technical development, but as individuals connected to culture, community, and purpose.

A Stronger Path Into the Trades

The Voyageur Trades Program represents a practical, experience-driven approach to building Alberta’s skilled workforce—one that recognizes talent, removes barriers, and creates real opportunity.
